|
I'm 41 years old (4' 6", 145 lbs) and you know how it goes, you don't really ever get better... anyway when I go to wal-mart or other stores I always get the motorized vehicle they have available, but I've never owned a chair. I'm thinking about getting one for the times we go somewhere that doesn't have courtesy chairs.
Can someone give me an idea of what kinds of things I should look for in an easily foldable/transportable chair? I'm thinking a medium size - I've seen some of the ones for bigger people and some of the ones our smaller friends use and don't think either will work for me.

Well, Peggy and I don't own a van, so it will need to be a folding one that we can put in the back seat or trunk.

Hi David. I think buying a chair is a really important decision. Once you get it you\'ve got it for a fair amount of time so you really want to find the right one for you.
There are so many different types on the market. All with slightly different capabilities and benefits.
We have a place here called the Independent Living Centre ... its has \'samples\' of all the different types of chairs and modifications available. They also have qualified staff who can help you to make a good decision and to find the right chair for your needs. If I were you I would see if there is a place similar in your your area and make a visit.
Good luck!
Jo

Well, I broke a toe a few days ago so we decided to jump the gun and rent one. We ended up getting an Invacare 9000 SL (I think) which is pretty nice. It's a little heavy, but it folds and the footrests come off. Also the arm rests fold to the back to give more room to wheel it myself. It only cost $55 to rent it and the store is trying to get my insurance to pay for it.

I too am about to get a new wheelchair. I'm torn between a light, sport whelchair and an all-terrain one

My husband is in a wheelchair fulltime due to OI and I have had my own time in a chair. I highly recommend Quickie wheelchairs and encourage you to be weary of Invacare. They are very heavy and clunky after awhile. DH's (dear husband's) current wheelchair is 18yrs old and the only reason we're replacing it is there is new technology that will greatly help him - four wheel suspension.
He is also 4'6" and is in a small Quickie. I fold it up and put it in my trunk or fold down my back seats and put it on there so I don't mess up the upholstery.
Also try out different cushions. The cushion can make a big difference in any chair you get. Your tush will appreciate it :-}

"Jazzy" is good as well, light, can be custom made and easy to "drive"

|
Hi folks, I just joined and saw this post on needing wheelchairs...
I'm in a chair full time myself and have been for about 31 years. I'll completely agree with being wary of Invacare products. I've owned 2 Invacare chairs and both have been horrid. One back in the early 80's when I was in high school and one just recently. Neither chair laster more than 18 months and both bit the dust of the same reason, the main electronics boards blew.
At the moment I am waiting on a new Pride Mobility Q6000Z. This will be my 7th chair in 31 years
I will recommend a site out there for anyone looking for wheelchair info
